Region V Men's Gymnastics
2000 Region V Routine Evaluation Review

Submitted by Ron Ferris

The first of two Region V Routine Evaluations for the 2000 season was offered at the Cereal City Classic on Saturday night February 19, 2000 in Battle Creek Michigan. The top eight finishers from the Friday competition in Classes I, II and III advanced to the second round of competition which began at 7:00 PM . During the coaches meeting it was suggested that the gymnasts warmup and compete one event at a time - in a quasi capital cup format - and all agreed that would be advantageous to the athletes but the times could not be coordinated with the officials. The gymnasts then warmed up all six events in an open warmup format and competed in a modified Olympic order with two officials on each event. Class I’s began on Floor Exercise, Class II’s on Pommel Horse and Class III’s on Still Rings. The gymnasts then rotated between these three events before moving on to the second three events. After each group had finished an event the gymnasts and coaches were given a review of their performances and a critique of their routine construction by the officials at the event. I personally traveled with the Class II group and have limited first hand knowledge of how the other two classes faired.

The first part of this review is an analysis of the Hit/Miss Ratio which was provided by each gymnast’s coach. A paper was distributed to the coaches during the second day of competition requesting that the coach provide a simple analysis for each event as to whether the athlete named on the form “Hit” a routine (the description provided was - Successful routine - no major flaws, stops or falls) or “Missed” a routine (the description provided was - missed Routine - include # of misses). The following is a summary of those forms which were returned:

The second part of this review compares the scores from the first day of competition (one official per event) to the second day of competition. I have only the Class II scores from both days to compare.
Gymnast Friday Saturday Change
All Around: Ronnie Ferris 48.15 48.15 0
Jordan Gearhart 44.35 46.275 +1.925
David Sender 44.85 45.475 +0.625

Devin Deer 43.85 41.20 -2.65
Brad Sutton 44.25 15.50 -28.75

The third part of this review compares the scores from both days compared to the coach’s reported Hit / Miss ratio.
1st day Hits 1st day Misses 2nd day Hits 2nd day Misses
Ferris 4 3 4 3
Sender 3 4 4 3
Hitchcock 3 3 2 7
Deer 3 3 4 2

The remainder of this review will address what I observed of the Class II performances from the 2nd day of competition.

Floor Exercise: The top score of 8.25 was shared by Jordan Gearhart of GTC Classics and Matthew Doboski of Branch. Matthew scored an 8.6 on day one and Jordan an 8.3 on day one.

Pommel Horse: There were very few complete routines without either a fall or a major break. The top finisher, Brad Sutton from GTC Classics, hit a complete routine scoring an 8.00. Sutton placed 2nd in preliminary competition scoring an 8.2 Still the top four finishers were separated by less than .50 points.

Still Rings: David Sender from Buffalo Grove, finished first with a 7.85. Sender’s coach reported no misses either day and sender scored a 7.7 on the first day.

Vaulting: Very consistent performances were reported with this group - 100% on both days. Gearhart won the 2nd day of competition with a score of 9.175 compared to his preliminary score of 9.05.

Parallel Bars: Ferris won the event with a score of 8.0 compared to the preliminary score of 8.20.

Horizontal Bar: Ferris places first with a score of 8.20 compared to the preliminary score of 8.1.

The second Region V Routine Evaluation was offered at the Indy Classic on March 4 & 5, 2000. The boys competed on Saturday at 12:30 PM and again on Sunday at 5:00 PM.

I would like to make a couple of observations regarding the results of this informal survey:
1). The overall percentage of successful routines on Pommel Horse is extremely low on both days with the Class II gymnasts having the statistical edge with a four day success rate of only 27% as compared to the Class III rate of 26% and the Class I rate of 25%. An overall rate of 26% or only 18 successful routines in 68 attempts!!
2). Typically the second day scores were lower even when compared to the Hit / Miss ratio of each gymnast. I would attribute this to both having a second official and having the officials in the mind set of being more deliberate in their evaluations of each routine. I would surmise that the second day scores would be more reflective of the scores at the regional or national competitions.
