(a reflective look at the world of gymnastics by the webmaster) In this sport I have noticed there are two kinds of parents: the kind that takes their
boy to practice and meets and are just thrilled that he finishes
each event. Totally happy not to know what the name is of that
twisty thing their child just did on the floor. And
caring less if the skill that was just done is in fact helping or
hurting the child's overall score. (These parents are great
in their own right and are the kinds that coaches undoubtedly
love!) Then there are those who can't get enough (I
obviously fall in that category). Needing to know not only
the name of that twisty thing, but what skill level it is and how
much it is worth as part of the routine. (I'm sure that we,
too, are loved by the coaches - just not in the same way).
It would seem as though more parents are becoming the "more
interested" type. I have two things to say on this
subject: first of all ... GREAT!!! maybe if enough of us get
more interested, then male gymnastics (especially in Indiana)
won't be such a misunderstood sport! Secondly... remember
that your son already has a COACH. As Dr. Allison Arnold
says... he has a coach at the gym, we as parents need to remain
exactly that -- PARENTS. I think that it is wonderful to know all
you can about the sport your son has gotten into, but I don't
think the line should be crossed from parent to coach. Let
the coach do his/her job... <smile>
With that said,
I think that the site that I link to (
Men's Gymnastics
by thedigitalman) is a GREAT one and can
answer all kinds of questions if you go to it. There is more
technical information on that site than I could ever imagine
posting on my site. The links will open new window(s) so you will
just need to close those to get back to here....
General Information by Levels: Compulsory AND Optional can be found by clicking on whichever you would like to know more about. Once there, you have the choice on the right sidebar to see more about specific classes. If you have questions about anything and can't find it on this site or on the "Men's Gymnastics" site, please feel free to email me and I will see if I can find the answer for you.
